In Brazil, Long-Stay Institutions for the Elderly (ILPIs) — residential, collective settings — house older adults with or without family support, many in a state of dependency. To keep residents safe, these institutions must have care staff prepared to give first aid and CPR and to respond quickly to emergencies.

Long-Stay Institution for the Elderly (ILPI), whose minimum operating standard is governed by ANVISA Resolution RDC No. 502/2021 (which replaced RDC 283/2005).

The first-aid requirement

The ILPI operating standard requires care and incident-response protocols: the care team must be able to give first aid and CPR to the resident while medical help is summoned. For the nursing technician/assistant, COREN registration requires the technical course, but for the elderly caregiver (cuidador de idosos, CBO 5162-10), an unregulated occupation, a standalone first-aid certificate is employer-valued.

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid certificate is the way to meet this requirement; it is in addition to the team's occupational training and must be renewed periodically.
