In health care, maintaining high standards of care is essential to protect the public. For nursing staff, mastering CPR and first aid is a professional expectation and, in many services, an employer requirement; for support staff and elderly caregivers, it is a valued condition to work. Here is what the rules expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training supports it.

In Brazil, nursing practice is governed by the Conselho Federal de Enfermagem (COFEN) and the regional councils (COREN), with mandatory registration to work. COFEN's normativity on basic and intermediate life support recommends that nursing professionals keep their competencies current and be able to act in emergencies.

For basic life support, COFEN recommends recertification of nursing professionals at least every 2 years and, in services applying medication protocols under BLS, requires complementary certification, plus direct supervision during the first 30 days. Keeping CPR and BLS current is therefore part of the profession's duty of competence.

There is no national continuing-education credit requirement to renew registration. However, for nursing staff working in life support, COFEN recommends recertification at least every 2 years, with complementary certification mandatory in services that add medication protocols under BLS.
